The Livestock at the Lake Douglas Ranch

The Lake Douglas Ranch is a small but growing concern™.

Now that we've moved to our bigger location we're starting to acquire additional livestock - beyond Bessie.

We currently have a small herd of eight Brangus - four cows, and their four calves.  Look below for some pictures.

We also have thee horses on the property.  The horses keep us busy at feeding time.  Trying to keep them apart is like working with two year olds - 1000 pound two year olds.  We have some picture of them below as well.

Near the bottom of the page you'll find pictures of our "home-based livestock."

Bessie, the Quality Assurance Cow

Bessie, the
Lake Douglas Ranch Quality Assurance Cow

Bessie (above right) is the Lake Douglas Ranch mascot.  She is also the Ranch's Quality Assurance Cow.  She's responsible for many areas around the Ranch, and is quite busy most of the time trying to ride herd on Cowboy Luke and Cowboy Dan.

The Ranch's horses

Ace - Cowboy Luke's horse Another shot of Ace - Cowboy Luke's horse
Ace - Cowboy Luke's horse. Ace is a Walker x Paso Fino cross, and he's about 15 year's old. Another shot of Ace.  He's the sweetest horse we have here at the Ranch, and one of the smoothest riding as well.
Thunder - Cowboy Dan's horse Another shot of Thunder - nosing around for treats
Thunder - Cowboy Dan's horse.  Thunder is a Morgan x Quarter Horse mix and a 1200 pound sweetheart.  He's the largest horse in the group. Thunder - looking for treats - but then again, he's always looking for treats.  "What's that your holding?  Is that a treat?"
Beauty - Miss Kitty's horse
Beauty - Miss Kitty's horse.
Beauty is a Morgan.  She's also Thunder's Mom.  She likes to keep to herself, though she's a very nice ride, and can be very sweet when the other horses aren't watching.

The Ranch's Brangus Herd

No. 7 and the baby bull - waiting behind the fence.  These two were the last to warm up to us No. 21 and Baby Red moving in

The Ranch's home based livestock

Spot at 3 1/2 - chasing mice...just the wrong kind

Camo - not so sure about this camera in her face.

Spot - playing "cat and mouse"
Camo and Spot - their baby picture
Camo (left) and Spot (right) joined the Ranch in late 2001.  They came to the Ranch as 4 month old kittens, and have been tearing up the place ever since.  They especially love helping to "break in" the new place.

It took almost a year to get the dogs and the cats sharing the living spaces of the Ranch, but now they've got the place to themselves - until the next puppies come along.

Boo

Boo, our 11 year old Yellow Lab
Boo passed away on July 4th, 2007.  He was our 14 year old Yellow Lab, having joined Cowboy Dan in August, 1995 after being rescued from the Lee County Humane Society as a two year old.

Boo had been with the Ranch since it's inception.  He enjoyed back scratches, tummy and  ear rubs, or any other kind of constant attention.  Boo settled into the routine at the new Ranch quite well - running around chasing cows, swimming in the livestock pond, and generally trying to track as much dirt back into the house as possible.

Elsa and Lucy

Elsa, and Cowboy Luke on May 2, 1999 Lucy, our 11 year old German Shepard
Elsa was Lucy's sister, and our favorite fuzzy German Shepard.

She had been with the Ranch since it's opening and had a special talent for finding weak places in fences.  Often if she couldn't find a weak spot she'd make one!

She passed away on May 3, 1999 at eight years of age.

Lucy passed away on July 5th, 2002 after a sudden illness. She was the Ranch's favorite German Shepherd, and was 11 year old.

She had  been with the Ranch since it's opening. She enjoyed barking for no apparent reason, and riding in the back of the truck.

We still miss Boo, Elsa, and Lucy terribly and we've found a beautiful spot for them at the Ranch.
